The days are finally getting longer and warmer!  Most of us can’t wait to feel those warm, sunny rays on our skin. Make sure you have the sun protection you need to protect your skin while enjoying the season.

Why we need daily sun protection

Sun exposure causes most of the skin changes that we think of as a normal part of aging. Over time, the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) light damages part of the skin called elastin. When these fibers break down, the skin begins to sag. Those warm rays also can cause pre-cancerous and cancerous skin lesions.

Cosmetically, the sun promotes fine and coarse wrinkles, freckles, pigmentation, leather-like texture, and the dilation of small blood vessels under the skin called spider veins.  However, it is not just on sunny, warm days our skin is negatively affected.  The light from the sun, present even on cloudy days, results in harmful UVA ray exposure through windows, car windshields, anywhere you are in daylight. These UVA rays are present year-round and can penetrate the clouds.  This is why is it necessary to use proper sunscreen every single day of the year during the daytime.   Your greatest sun exposure is during the middle of the day so be extra vigilant then.

Look for the signs of sun- related skin damage on your own skin.  Compare sun exposed areas of your face to areas that have never seen the sun.  How do they compare? One area has much younger looking skin and it’s not the area with repeated sun exposure.  If you add  toxins from smoking, the skin damage appears earlier and more pronounced.

What to look for in a sunscreen

So enough of the bad news.  Let’s look at what you can do to prevent damage and protect your skin from cancer and premature aging. People often ask us for anti-aging creams. We definitely have some great formulas that will improve the look and feel of your skin. But by far the absolute best anti-aging product you can buy for your skin is a daily sunscreen. It may not be glamourous, but honestly it is the single best thing you can do everyday for your skin health.

Which sunscreen should you buy? Look for a product with a broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protecting formula.  The best sunscreen is one you love and WANT to wear.   Many sunscreens today have minimal or no odor, go on easily and can last through sweating or swimming. We have awesome sunscreens designed for different lifestyles and needs.  Sone formulas can replace your moisturizer, primer or even your makeup.  When your skin looks great, you won’t need a heavy foundation.

What about sunscreen in makeup?  We get this question A LOT! While there is nothing wrong with your makeup containing SPF, it isn’t the same as a sunscreen product. In makeup, there may be some sunscreen in it, but at what percentage?  Will it be applied to the neck, chest, ears, eyelids as sunscreen should?  There is also the issue of coverage. You would need about 7 times the amount of makeup to give you enough protection if you are relying only on the sunscreen that is in most makeup formulas.

There are also products you want to avoid in your sunscreen. Look for formulas that are noncomedogenic, sensitivity-free, fragrance-free and paraben-free.  At Sky Vein & Aesthetics, we sell outstanding sunscreen products by EltaMD, Skinbetter Science and NeoCutis.  We have products that work great for the outdoor types, a sheer option men favor, and compacts and sticks that are great for reapplying.  We are happy to help you pick one you will love and want to wear every day!  Feel free to give us a call at 270-846-1500 or visit us online at
